We are often asked: How is the bookstore doing? The short answer is that for a decade we have been struggling financially while thriving intellectually and culturally. Our dedication to offering and selling the works published by university presses is as rewarding as ever, but publishing practices and reading and buying patterns are changing – often to the good, but also often making our kind of bookselling more difficult.
We very much want to continue to be a place where you can find a valuable book to buy and read, where you can hear and meet authors, read and discuss books with others. We now recognize this requires a degree of subvention. In 2009, we launched the Friends of UPB and in 2010 we formed a non-profit affiliate, the 2430 Arts Alliance “to encourage and promote scholarly and literary publications, classical music, and other arts in Berkeley.”
With the two additional forms of support, we hope to strengthen UPB/Berkeley as a home for books and events that stimulate your and our minds. To make our unique bookstore sustainable for a longer term, we need about ten percent of our operating costs covered by donations, and we hope you will join us and hundreds of other supporters with a donation as:
_____ A Friend of UPB: $40 to $499; includes invitations to all Alliance-supported events each year and annual opportunities to purchase books or music at a discount.
_____ An Associate: $500 – $1,499; includes the above and complimentary tickets to special literary and musical evenings at 2430 Bancroft Way.
_____ A Sponsor: $1,500 – $4,999; includes all of the above and an invitation to participate in the board of the 2430 Arts Alliance and help shape our policies and events.
_____ A Patron: $5,000+ a major supporter – includes all of the above and with a named program within the Alliance.
All donations will be acknowledged in writing for tax purposes.
