After 49 years in business, University Press Books has pretty much stepped into history.
Back in the '70s, what at first seemed a far-fetched gleam in William McClung's eye quickly became a go-to resource for Berkeley scholars as well as intellectuals, artists, and activists of the East Bay and beyond.
The business model that proved so relevant and vital to the community for our first few decades became less so in the digital millennium. From being an essential resource, we became an occasional convenience and later an after thought, despite attempts to turn things around and the heroic support of frequent customers, investors, and donors.
If you have been one or more of these, we heartily thank you.
